Remembering Frances Sternhagen.
January 13, 1930 -
November 27, 2023.
Her Tony-winning Broadway career included “Driving Miss Daisy,” “On Golden Pond” and “The Heiress.” On TV she had maternal roles in “Cheers” and “Sex and the City.”
Frances Sternhagen Carlin, longtime resident of New Rochelle, died peacefully at home on November 27, 2023 at age 93. She leaves behind 6 children, 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and a rich, joyous life as an accomplished actress.
In Washington DC, where she grew up, she met and married her husband and fellow actor, Thomas A. Carlin, who preceded her in death in 1991. They moved to New York, and while raising their family, began their careers. Although she found success in television, and film, she always returned to her first love, theater, where she awarded the highest honors, but also granted the respect, admiration and abiding friendships of her peers, collaborators, and audiences.
She enjoyed her New Rochelle neighborhood because of its proximity to the NY theater district but mostly because she loved being near the water and her neighbors. She often attributed her ability to succeed in her work to her strong marriage partnership and to the powerful sense of community that existed in the New Rochelle neighborhood in which her children were raised. She maintained close friendships with her neighbors throughout her life. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, doing puzzles and playing games, drawing and painting, traveling world wide, and above all, singing with friends and family. Every Christmas, on her own and with her husband before his death, she hosted a rousing and celebratory Christmas caroling party that was the toast of every neighbor’s holiday season.
Frannie lived life fully and gracefully. She will be loved and missed by many.
Surviving family are her children Paul (wife Becky), Amanda (husband Fred), Tony (wife Susan), Sarah (husband Derek), Peter, and John; her grandchildren, Justin, Tyler, Carlin, Payton, Thomasina, Connor, Grace, Amelia, and Nora; and her great grandchildren Wyatt and Westlie.
A visitation will be hosted by the family at the George T. Davis Funeral Home on Sunday, December 3 from 4-7pm. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Name Church in New Rochelle, NY on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 1:30pm. The interment will be held the following day at Rose Hill Cemetery in Putnam, NY.
